Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge is located off of Route 1 in Charlestown RI. The area was used as a naval auxiliary landing field during World War II and still contains many over grown runways and landing areas, along with some old buildings. In fact World War II era hellcats can even be seen flying in the area to this day, although they no longer use the landing field and are now flown solely for show and nostalgic purposes.
Ninigret is a great area to spot many species of birds, being that it is so large (about 227 acres); it has as many, if not more, species of birds as acres. Although, many just visit seasonally there are at least 70 or so species that nest in the area.
